Jewish involvement
in the discovery & colonisation of both the Americas and the Indies In October 2019 Bernard shared stories of some of the surprising finds he had made while digging into his genealogy. Most of those covered the 20C and included accounts of Jewish LGBT+ activists in the Dutch resistance in WWII and rescues from concentration camps of one set of relatives by others. As he has delved further, the surprise finds have accumulated. When names started to turn up in the immediate family of his Spanish and Portuguese ancestors in the 1500s, with the description “Governor General” or “Vicreoy” of Portuguese India, he dismissed them as probable errors as that was the height of the Inquisitions. By the time he had found 20 of the first 20 were from Sephardic families in his tree, there seemed to be a clear pattern. Investigating the backgrounds of some of those people led to even more astonishing finds about the Christopher Columbus 'discovery' of America and Vasco da Gama’s establishment of sea routes to India, many of them apparently counter-intuitive. Join us for what promises to be a fun presentation full of surprise historical facts about the Jewish involvement in the European discovery and colonisation of both the Americas and the Indies.
